With a degree in history and languages, Toby didn’t originally plan to train as a lawyer. But he was attracted by Freshfields’ openness: “I applied to Freshfields because it seemed like somewhere where you were valued for your opinion and different experiences, legal or non-legal, and that's definitely true. It makes for an exciting place to work.”
Toby describes his training as highly varied and supportive. “It’s a great place to start your career. You get exposed early on to lots of different types of work and there's a real focus on learning and development.” He has put his degree to good use. “It’s very international. I’ve worked with local counsel from all over the world and colleagues in our network offices in every matter.”
Reflecting on his time at Freshfields, Toby shared: “You realise that everyone is on your side. Before I started, I felt a bit intimidated. There’s a lot of expectation on your shoulders, but as soon as you get to know people it very quickly becomes a lot more natural.”
