In our briefing, we consider the levels of whistleblower protection currently available in a number of jurisdictions and look at the new protections being proposed by the European Commission, which, if adopted, would apply across the EU. The proposed new whistleblower protection directive prescribes minimum standards of protection for whistleblowers against retaliation for reporting breaches of EU law. The directive, as currently drafted, is broad in scope in that it applies not only to employees, but also to the self-employed, contractors, interns and job applicants. Our briefing looks at the Commission's proposal in detail.
